If I Had to Describe 2020 in One Word

I’ve been wrapping my head around this trying to find the perfect word to describe 2020 but I just can’t. I’m seriously dumbfounded and still trying to fathom everything that’s going on. Nothing makes sense anymore. I’ve had to refrain myself from adding all the curse words in every damn sentence. A few won’t hurt as the tone speaks for itself.

Shit, weird, lost, abhorrent, dejected, disheartened, agonising, distressed, enraged, flabbergasted, fucked, alone, painful, chaos, hopeless, isolated, discombobulated, disastrous, lonely, difficult, hell, incompetent, distorted, disappointed, I think you get the gist.

So what have we learnt about 2020? Not a great start to the new decade.

2020 Has Been…

Mentally Challenging

There’s only so much an individual can mentally handle when bad news is constantly thrown in your face one after another. We have been witnessing a catastrophe unfolding throughout the year, with what it seems to have no light at the end of the tunnel. It’s been emotionally draining from the very beginning, weighing heavily on our hearts.

There have been many opportunities for the government to get this pandemic under control, but nope. Instead, they have opted for last-minute, highly questionable, bs decisions and plans over and over again; always being late to the party bringing further distressful consequences. We’ve already gone past it’s an accident waiting to happen a long time ago. Yes, we have the right to be angry, the right to complain, the right to cry, the right to express our disapproval. Aside from the handling of the pandemic, there were other issues that had stood out, causing a huge outpour here in the UK.

I’m stopping myself here before I spout any unpleasant, unintelligible language. Overall, it’s been an eye-opener on all aspects of everything, not just the two mentioned.

An Eye Opener

Is it possible to find the silver lining in this instance? I guess we can be grateful to still be alive but what about those who have lost loved ones? At a time like this, some people need to learn to be more empathetic and compassionate rather than using others’ distress as some sort of pawn in petty arguments and theories. 2020 hasn’t been the easiest year, most likely the worst year in everyone’s eyes.

It has brought out the ugly side of those who we thought were familiar with, transforming them into someone completely new. Having different opinions isn’t the issue. It’s more about the stubbornness and attacking others who’s opinions are the exact opposite of their own. A lot of name-callings was all I had seen. Sigh. I’m OK with different opinions as everyone is entitled to their own but attacking others, that’s where I cross the line. Some take it one step further, turning it into hate speech, even trolling. I will judge you on your attitude, values and morals.

Full of Uncertainty

When can we see our loved ones again?
Is Christmas cancelled? (Sadly, yes for millions).
When will life return back to normal?
Life after Brexit?
When’s pasta, flour, toilet roll coming back in stock?

There are a million and one questions to which no one knows the answer to still or even knew of at the time. Zero clarity.

A Learning Curve

It has been a steep learning curve for many or a very long difficult climb. Daunting to say the least. We’ve had to learn to quickly adapt to a temporary lifestyle not many of us are used to. I’m certain it had made us all appreciate what we have a lot more and less about the material possessions. Lives will always be of greater importance, so always keep your loved ones close to you. We’ve always been taught to never take things for granted but how many of us actually have this common yet powerful saying ingrained inside our brains? 2020 surely has kicked us up the butt with this ensuring we live by it every single day.

It had allowed us to re-evaluate and set or even reset our priorities straight, with some starting anew or just making a small change in their path. We had time for some needed serious introspection, learning what makes us tick and what our coping mechanisms were.

Full of Hate

Pitting one skin colour against another, race against the other, even the same skin colour and race are against their own. What the heck, even the NHS front line workers are receiving revolting comments for speaking the truth to which has sadly been on the increase recently. They speak out about the terrifying ordeal they see and experience with their own two eyes on a daily basis just to keep the rest of us safe only to be demoralised, undermined by the small minority. It’s frightening how conspiracy theories and misinformation are prevailing with zero knowledge of the medical field. Do we thank social media to help fuel such abhorrent loathing?

Thank you NHS for everything. I’m livid for you.

The Year of Change and Growth

On a slightly more positive note, it’s been a year of change, raising further awareness on a specific issue that has been lingering around for decades – racism. We need to keep this level of energy going for many decades to come, coming together to eliminate racism. Please speak out about your own experiences, but more importantly, when you see it happening to others, use your voice and help call out racism.

It’s the same with other forms of discrimination. Speak out. Educate yourself. Spread awareness. Teach others. It’s these small steps that will help.

Like No Other

2020 has been like no other. That’s it, that’s the tweet.

Dear 2021

Please let there be a sign, clarity or a glimmer of hope. I’m ready to write off 2020, burying it deep and to not having to visit that dreadful time again. I’m counting on you to bring normality, positivity and hope back into our lives as well as more empathy, compassion and wisdom. That’s my only wish.

Time to say goodbye to 2020 with the middle finger. I wish you all a Happy New Year. Fingers crossed for a better year. Remember to continue to grow, to have the courage to fight for a better world but more importantly, look after your mental wellbeing.
