Delight: Media Art Exhibition

In my December monthly musings post, I mentioned an exhibit I had visited where I didn’t know what to expect, this is it! 12 immersive artworks with interpretations of various aspects of Korean culture and a treasure hunt is what to expect. The artist, Gyoungtae Hong, captures Seoul where you are a part of the art itself, combining art, light, sound and technology, taking the old and giving it a contemporary flair.

Delight is more than an exhibition; it’s a journey into the core of Seoul’s essence, a dance between innovation and heritage that will leave you transformed.

Delight

You can walk through the bustling city of Seoul, breathing in the history, culture and identity without visiting. It’s like a taster of what to expect. One minute you’re on the streets in London and the next, you’re in Seoul. Everything was just mesmerising. Your eyes cannot focus on one area of the art. It’s constantly looking all over, taking in every bit of it where possible. You’ll see the art on the wall, then yourself, on others, and back on the wall whilst listening to the sound.

Not only do you have the pieces of art to look at, but you also have to be on the lookout for Korean characters as there is a treasure hunt like aspect to it. This takes treasure hunting to a whole new level by incorporating augmented reality. As you scan the character via the exhibition’s app, you’ll see that each character represents the first character of Korean desserts and the dessert will appear on your screen, giving you an insight into another aspect of Korea’s culture. Saying it was cool is an understatement – big kudos to those who were involved with the app’s creativity and development! Once you have collected it, you will have a quick overview of what the dessert is and there’s a mix of traditional, royal and retro desserts – mmm dalgona but I’ll always think of Squid Game. Once you’ve collected all 15, you can claim a postcard at the end of the exhibit in the shop.

You only need an hour to thoroughly immerse yourself in it all. As it’s in Borough Yards under London’s Victorian railway, it’s a great way to spend some time and then visit Borough Market right after or walk along the Thames.

It was running until the 28th January 2024 but they have extended it to 14th April. If you have the opportunity to visit it, don’t pass on it.
