My Mum, My Style Icon

03 August 2016

WHO IS YOUR STYLE ICON?

Whenever someone asks me who my fashion/style icon is, I wouldn't be able to answer that. It's hard to limit it to one and especially since my style and taste changes often. My mum WhatsApped me the other day telling me she had found old photos of herself and sent some over. After all these years, she couldn't find any photos of herself as a child, teen and young adult until her siblings and friends showed her some whilst she's currently visiting China and Hong Kong.

Born and raised in China, I've listened to stories of her childhood, family history and the history of China, which is always intriguing. Hearing how she grew up and what life was like back then for her was inspiring and completely different to the way I grew up in the UK.

Looking at these photos, her style was flawless. Was? More like it still IS. I knew she always had good taste and could see this whilst growing up. She'd tell me straight up if something I tried on doesn't look good, but I was a stubborn child. I thought I had totally rocked whatever I've tried on, but when in fact, it looked horrendous. Lesson learnt, mothers know best, even when you think you know what's best for yourself now. Even now, we do have a lot of disagreements and the odd agreement here and there but I am starting to listen to her more even if our styles are different. We do share clothes and on some clothing, she pulls it off better than I do!

When something comes into trend nowadays, she'd tell me how it was a trend back in the late 7s, sometime during the 80s or even the 90s! This makes me think, fashion trends gets recycled. Yes they do come and go but they will make an appearance again at some point. What we think is "new" in our generation, in reality, it technically isn't.

I need to find more photos of her and to lust over her taste. I know that I wouldn't be able to pull off what she has worn, but to answer the question, she is my icon. Not only in fashion, but everything about life.

Who is yours?

  4. I remember my Mum cringing at some of the things I wore as a teen because she'd previously worn the same styles herself. I now know how she feels when I see "90s" trends on the high street yet remember wearing them myself!

  23. My mother was a fashionable woman as well. She also told me that fashion trends come and go then come back again. This is the reason why I try not to eliminate old clothes from my closet since fashion trends get "recycled" as you said.

  27. Wow! What a super cool Mum! Actually my mum was also very stylish until she got married and took up a job where she was required to dress up rather modestly. I love looking at her photos from college and university time and she dressed so well. I still go to her when I am stuck with choices and she normally gives me the best advice!

  38. You mum is a fashionista mum! She has a very interesting style, guess it is no secret why you look up to her. I must say my mum is also my style icon. She isn't as fashionable as you mum, far from it. But she opts for what's comfortable and simple, and I guess in a way, I am like that, too.
